Something to Read

December has been a particularly busy month for me, which little time to enjoy reading. However, each of the titles I have “stacked” up offers the promise of fresh perspectives, inspiring stories, and ideas that speak to the way we connect with the world and each other.

  • The Cold Start Problem by Andrew Chen. This book explores how things—businesses, movements, even relationships—gain momentum through wider connection.
  • The Small and the Mighty by Sharon McMahon, also known as “Sharon Says So.” Sharon is one of my favorite people to follow on social media. She is smart, thoughtful, generous, and compassionate. Her book tells stories of lesser-known heroes and celebrates their powerful impact.
  • Remarkably Bright Creatures by Shelby Van Pelt. The few pages I have read of this book tell me that I am about to encounter a story of connection between human resilience and healing – through one of our greatest powers, nature.
  • The Let Them Theory by Mel Robbins. This book seems to focus on embracing what you can’t change and finding peace in letting go. My hope is that this message will help me focus on the areas of my life where I can release control and free-up mental space.

As we head into the new year, I’m excited to dive in and let these ideas shape how I show up in the world. What’s on your nightstand, literal or metaphorical, as you look ahead?

I have included links from each title to purchase them from my favorite local bookstore in San Diego, The Book Catapult, but you can also find the digital or audiobook formats at the online retailer of your choice.

Something to Hear

Earlier this month, I had a lovely chat with my friend and client, Rob Macari.

Rob is a credit union guru who manages National Accounts for LSI and has delved into the fun of video-making to share his insights on creating connection and purpose in lending services.

During our conversation, we got onto the topic of attending conferences and how to make the most of them. Rob shared a simple yet powerful piece of advice: preparation and planning are key. His take? Conferences are golden opportunities to expand your network and foster meaningful connections—but only if you’re intentional about it.

He recommended an episode of the Sales Unscripted podcast that described common mistakes people make at conferences, especially the tendency to stick with coworkers rather than engaging with new people. It’s a fresh reminder of how important it is to break out of your comfort zone, approach others with curiosity, and maximize the value of these events.

Whether you’re preparing for a conference or just looking for a better approach to networking, this episode is a must-listen. Take Rob’s advice: plan ahead, be intentional, and step out of your usual circles. You never know what opportunities a meaningful conversation might bring.

  • Hear how the Sales Unscripted podcast talk about their sales “pet peeves” (episode #99) – including bad approaches to networking at conferences. A note that there is adult language in this recording. You can find the recording on their website: https://www.sales-unscripted.com/ or wherever you get your podcasts.

Something to Do

Get your workspace ready.

Each year I make a “Top 10 list” for my year ahead. Ten accomplishable things that I want to do during the year. Usually, this list includes playing golf with my dad one time, taking my dog on a day trip, or (as was on this year’s list) confidently poach an egg.

Another item on my list this year was to design my office space. I wanted to create a space that gives me inspiration and calm. I must admit, I am taking this one to the final minute and planning to spend the last days of 2024 pulling it together. Cheers to all of us creating the space – literally or figuratively – to do the work that makes us feel most whole in 2025.

Something to See

The art of gift-giving is one that I greatly admire in others. This year I received several meaningful gifts, and I am incredibly grateful for these and all the people who fill my life. One gift came with a message that was so beautiful and poignant that I must share it with others. Build your circle this year – the easiest way to do this is to start by showing others that you are in their circle.
